Abstract in English: This research aims at making out the significations of iltifāt found in the Holy Qur’ān and coming out with a general scheme to account for its occurrence in order to enhance the understanding of the subtleties of this feature of Qur’ānic style. To accomplish this, the research was carried out by way of a deductive and analytical study of the instances of iltifāt in the Holy Qur’ān. As a prelude to the discussion of this subject, the researcher provides an account of the meaning of iltifāt among the Arab rhetoricians and the status of iltifāt as one of the rhetorical tropes. The subsequent three chapters deal with the significations of iltifāt which have already been mentioned by previous scholars, and since those scholars touched on the significations only briefly, the researcher strived to explore further aspects of their interpretations. Chapter five is both an effort to highlight new significations of iltifat and an attempt to introduce a new approach in looking at the iltifāt phenomenon, using two Qur’ānic surahs, Surat Luqman and Surat al-Hadid, to demonstrate the application of this new perspective. In chapter six, the researcher analyzes a large number of instances of iltifāt from which their general patterns are explained together with their significations. In the closing chapter, a summary of the important points is provided together with the conclusions arrived at by the researcher. These include the finding that the consideration of an instance of iltifat in relation to other instances, either in the particular surah where they occur or in the Qur’ān as a whole, gives a more meaningful picture of its significance than that which comes out of the consideration of a solitary example within the confines of its immediate context. This research has shown that the instances of iltifat in Surat Luqman and Surat al-Hadid, when construed based on an overall understanding of each surah, can be seen to evolve around a particular theme or function that is of essence to the surahs. It also shows that the occurrence of iltifat in the Qur’ān follows certain patterns that are related to the intended significations at the various locations where they appear in the Qur’ān.
