Abstract in English: The main purpose of this study is to identify the roles that the school counselor should play in counseling programmes in Pondok Modern Darussalam, Gontor, Indonesia .An attempt has also been made to explore students' views toward the counselor's role. To achieve these purposes, a self-developed questionnaire was utilized in the study. The instrument was a five-point Likert-type scale. Of 4,434 pupils in the school, 240 students were randomly selected to participate in the study, 173 were male and 67 were female, aged 12-21 years, drawn from Form 1 to Form 6. The results of the study indicated that the students generally agreed that the school counselor should perform four main roles, namely, a general role, an academic role, a personal role, and a vocational role. Furthermore, it was found that the students’ views toward the school counselor’s role were favourable. In conclusion, the study recommends that the school counselor should play his or her role, as suggested by the students, as much as possible because the school counselor is the most suitable person to conduct guidance and counseling programmes and should maintain the students’ favourable views toward him or her as well.
