This thesis aims at analyzing the importance of medical treatment in treating certain illnesses and its principles in the light of the Sunnah. Muslims nowadays are not generally aware of some of the guidance of the Prophet’s Sunnah in medical treatment. Generally, there are two trends current in Muslim societies; first, putting greater emphasis on the importance of certain adhkar (recitation of certain Qur’anic verses) and dua’ (prayers) only as means to treat certain illnesses and diseases, and second, resorting to some other practices akin to those usually practiced by magicians and shamans, believing that they are part of the Prophet’s medicine. These trends have demonstrated to us that some of the Muslims have misunderstood the Prophet’s medicine and its unique place in the Islamic tradition of medical treatment. The thesis gives details of the concept and principles of medical treatment, the evidences on the legitimacy of treatment in the light of the Sunnah, and the meaning and the concept of Islamic medicine. The principles of medical treatment in the light of the Sunnah as discussed in the thesis are two: (1) the treatment which is called adwiyah hissiyyah (tangible medical treatment) and that of (2) adwiyah ma’nawiyyah (spiritual medical treatment). The research is based on analyzing authentic ahadith (traditions) of the Prophet and its commentary by scholars of Hadith. This thesis has also demonstrated the compatibility between the Prophet’s medical treatment and that which are discovered by recent empirical scientific research. Honey and black seeds, for example, are chosen here to be the main focus of discussion because their usage was encouraged by the Prophet in his medical treatment. The method used in this study is the textual analysis from the books of Hadith and the commentaries written by well-known Hadith scholars.en_US
