This study is aimed at bringing to light the personality of Muhammad Tāhir of Panj′pīr, his services to Qur’anic studies, particularly his establishment of a school, his role in correcting religious beliefs that prevailed in his society by setting up an organization for the dissemination of Qur’an and Sunnah, and his methods in tafsīr. The researcher employs the inductive method in studying the Qur’anic āyāt by the revered teacher Muhammad Tāhir – using books, recorded materials, newspapers, magazines. The researcher also uses the analytical method in the study. Among the important findings of the study is that Muhammad Tāhir was greatly influenced by his teacher’s school of tafsīr, so much so, that he, himself, was later recognized as a scholar of the science of tafsīr eventhough he struggled a lot in the course of disseminating the sciences of Qur’an and Sunnah. He wrote numerous books on tafsīr and its sciences in which he addressed issues such as various aspects of Qur’anic sciences, the order of Qur’anic āyāt and suwar (how they were revealed against how they exist in the mushaf), the circumstances of individual instances of revelation, and the phases (makkī and madanī) of revelation. Tāhir’s explication of Qur’anic āyāt may be classified as tafsīr bi-al-maathūr, for he explains the Qur’an by the Qur’an itself; then by Sunnah; and then by the sayings of the Rasūl’s companions as well as issues related to language and rhetoric with Arabic poetry and explanation of issues in creed. In conclusion, the researcher sees that other studies need be done by the researchers in looking at the recitations by Tāhir and his views in regard to the use of Qur’anic ayat to support jurisprudential rules.en_US
