dc.description.abstractThe discussion of this thesis is about a proposal to establish waqf funds in the Republic of Sudan as a means to contribute to the social development of Sudanese Society and to offer practical solutions that can aid the alleviation of poverty as well as combating unemployment in Sudan. The idea is modelled based on the contemporary waqf funds system by Kuwait Awqaf as an innovative contemporary system of waqf management capable of responding to the needs of the society. The thesis also investigates the nature of the waqf funds, their objectives and their types in comparison to the collective investment funds. Similarly, the modus operandi of establishing and managing the waqf funds which involves the administration and marketing of the waqf funds, identification of the donors and beneficiaries as required by the shariah and the regulatory requirements as well as the role of waqf in developing the societies is also discussed. The discussion in this thesis also addresses the shariah rulings in regards to investing waqf funds and most importantly, the shariah guidelines on investing waqf funds in financial markets as well as risk management in investing waqf funds. In addition to discussing the history of endowment, its stages of development with reference to its types and the contemporary experiences in Sudan, the researcher also reflects on the experiences of Kuwait, Bab al-Rizq Jameel, al-Rajhi waqf foundation in discussing poverty alleviation and job creation strategies for the case of Sudan. This thesis addresses the urgent need to develop waqf models according to the needs of the society and accordingly, it proposes four different waqf funds models seen as viable for proffering practical solutions to the poverty and unemployment problems in Sudan.en_US
