dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this research is to evaluate the Malay readers' acceptance of the use of Arabic loanwords in the Malay language translation of Al-Quran. The data were collected by calculating their readers' acceptance and statements in their tendency in using these Arabic loanwords. One hundred and eleven students were selected for this research; they were majoring in the Arabic language as their second language and other fields such as law, architecture, accounting, economics, English and history. These samples are students of International Islamic University Malaysia. The researcher chose loanwords from the Arabic language that match their meanings in the Malay language. These words were taken from Al-Quran and there were ninety six words altogether. In conclusion, the acceptance towards these Arabic loanwords can be divided into four categories: i) Same acceptance for these loanwords by both groups of readers, ii) Different acceptance for these loanwords by both groups of readers, iii) Rejected loanwords by both groups of readers and iv) No difference in acceptance of loanwords with meanings in the Malay language by both groups of readers. It is found that the readers accept loanwords from the Arabic language if the meanings are more accurate than the long translation in Malay language that would cause confusion among readers. They also accept loanwords that express more than the Malay language could. However, Arabic loanwords with no definite meaning in the Malay language are rejected by readers. | en_US |
