dc.description.abstract | The overwhelming majority of learners of Arabic language, today, are Muslims who enthusiastically learn it by reasons of religious impulse. It is an undeniable fact that, a proper understanding of Islam requires a thorough and appropriate comprehension of Hadith literature which is the second source of Islamic legislation. However, the issue of metaphor constitutes to be a major obstruction and challenge to the learners of Arabic language. The reason being that metaphorical expressions carry more than one meaning, a factor which largely diverts one's construction sense from the real meaning of a metaphorical term. To provide solution to this problem, it is important to study the prophetic traditions in linguistic terms in order to trace the terms that were used in metaphorical forms, explain the extent of their lexical and the exact intended contextual meanings. The task, however, is arduous and cannot be dealt with without arranging these terms in a dictionary form. This study aims at tracing and compiling metaphorical expressions that appeared in SAHIH AL-BUKHARI from the beginning of the book to the chapter on Jihad (Holy war). It points out the exact intended meanings of these metaphorical terms in the context in which they were employed. The aim is to provide avenues for effective utilisation of these metaphorical expressions and terms in explaining actual letter and spirit of the prophetic traditions. This will assist a learner of Arabic language to deal with prophetic traditions effectively. The study is based on descriptive and analytical research methodology. The methodology is designed to trace metaphorical expressions in the above-defined portion of this study in Sahih al-Bukhari. It examines and analyses constituent elements of their meaning. The study has analysed ninety-four (94) metaphorical expressions. Each of these metaphorical expressions has valuable meaning that has a role in explaining the letter and spirit of prophetic traditions. The study did not ignore to point out the importance of contextual outlook in achieving the real meaning of a metaphorical expression. | en_US |
